Stranded without Personal Belongings:
putting offenders with mental health issues at risk
Wednesday, January 29, 2014
12pm to 1pm EST
To examine the issues related to offender belongings within the justice system in Ontario. Many individuals are released from custody without their medication, health card, money, keys to their residence and sometimes even without their civilian clothes. Individuals cannot or do not pick up their belongings due to transportation issues and other barriers, leaving them stranded and more likely to re-offend. Across Ontario, many Human Services and Justice Coordinating Committees (HSJCCs) are trying to address this issue through protocols and with the help of volunteers. More attention is being given to the retrieval of prisoner belongings both regionally and provincially. Based on the discussion paper “The Issue of Prisoner Belongings – A Recipe for Re-offending,” issues and strategies will be shared through this free webinar.
